Nathan Joyce Mouthbreather Show

Yesterday, I accompanied Nathan Joyce with his set of mostly new songs. Also on the bill for the night was The Catalyst, Mouthbreather, The Riot Before, and Sweat Lodge. I hadn't played at Gallery 5 in a while but it went really well. Allen Bergendahl made everything sound great and they have a fairly new stage I hadn't seen before, but the success of the show is thanks to the really great audience that adapted to Nathan's set and then instantly transitioned into the pace needed for the rest of the show. Nathan sounded awesome and I didn't mess up anything until the end and even then I think I was the only one who noticed that I wasn't playing the part I was supposed to be playing. Luckily for Nathan the part fit fine. I'm not sure when it's coming out but Nathan will have a self released ep available sometime soon. I played on it and so did a few others though I'm not sure who made it on as the plans for the recording changed a bunch and since Nathan lives in Florida which makes coordinating between people hard.

The following is a picture of John Martin of Mouthbreather/roomate of many years doing what looks to be either an impersonation of the Elvis on the flier for the show or the forbidden dance of the Troll.

Jonathan Vassar Show

So I played a show with Jonathan Vassar last Thursday.

We had practiced a few times including before the show so I felt pretty comfortable with the material.  I really like playing music with Jonathan as it's both pretty easy to play to, but also sounds great with the cello. I played with the mute on my cello to make up for the fact that it was an entirely acoustic set, which I think worked about how it should.

All in all, the turn out was really good and it was a nice night, though a little on the rainy side.  It was great seeing David Lamb of Brown Bird again though I didn't get to hang out as much as I would have liked.  Liza played with Curtis ending the night really well.  I like when shows book light and end proper.

I really like playing music with Jonathan and I'm really excited about his upcoming EP that We're putting out on TripleStamp.

I play on the record, but more importantly so does everyone else especially David Shultz and The Skyline.   You can check out his website here. You can hear an almost completed version from one of his songs off the new record here, as it was recently included on a RVA Magazine comp.  I'm not sure when the record will be officially out but I assume it will be this summer.

Getting Started

I thought it'd be nice to start a blog to let those whom are interested in following what I do these day know what I'm up to.

Recently I've been going through the numbers of applying for student loans for Graduate school. I don't care much for the process as I've never enjoyed spending money, let alone vast sums of money I don't have and have trouble imagining I ever will.

Despite everything I just said I've bought a digital camera to both document my art as I make it but also to record this chapter in my life, as I imagine it'll be an eventful one, or at least an expensive one.

Here are some recent pictures.
The following is Forest Hill Park which is literally across the street from my house. It's where I run when I run and is one of my favorite places within the city of Richmond. A lot of people don't even know it exists which is ridiculous since it's pretty huge for a city park. The other night Meredith, Ryan , and I watched a family of 6 deer graze for an hour. Keep checking back as I plan on updating this blog regularly especially when I go to Skowhegan and when Meredith and I move to Boston.
